Using AI in Conversations That Are Too Long
AI gets worse the longer you talk to it. And it won't tell you.
When conversations get too long -- roughly 15 or more back-and-forth messages -- AI silently cuts corners. It gives shorter answers, skips nuance, and takes shortcuts. All while sounding just as confident as it did in message one.
Independent testing has shown that AI quality degrades noticeably in long sessions -- giving wrong or shortcut answers far more often than in fresh conversations. The problem is that you won't notice. The tone stays polished. The formatting stays clean. But the quality drops off a cliff.
This is one of the most common reasons people feel like AI "stopped working" or "got lazy." It didn't change -- the conversation just got too long for it to handle well.
The Fix
Start a fresh chat for anything important. If you're deep into a conversation and need something critical, open a new one. Treat long chats like scratch paper, not a permanent workspace.
Copy the key context from your long conversation into a new chat. You'll get noticeably better results from a fresh start with good context than from continuing a tired thread.
The confidence of the answer has nothing to do with its accuracy. AI sounds the same whether it's right or wrong.
Treating Every AI the Same
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are not interchangeable. Each has strengths.
Claude is strongest at long documents, nuanced writing, and following complex instructions. ChatGPT is better for general knowledge and creative brainstorming. Gemini is best when you need Google ecosystem integration -- Docs, Sheets, Gmail.
Using the wrong AI for the task is like using a screwdriver as a hammer. It technically works, but you're wasting effort. And most people default to whichever tool they signed up for first, regardless of what they're actually trying to do.

Never Giving AI Context About You
AI without context gives generic answers. AI with context gives useful ones.
Most people open a new chat and ask a question cold. No context about their business, their audience, their goals. The result is generic, one-size-fits-all output that needs heavy editing before it's usable.
The fix is simple: create a context document. Who you are, what your business does, who your customers are, your tone of voice, your common tasks. Paste it at the start of important conversations or save it as a custom instruction.

Trusting the Tone Instead of Checking the Facts
AI sounds confident whether it's right or wrong. That's by design.
AI is trained to sound confident. It won't say "I'm not sure about this part." It presents everything with the same authority -- whether it's giving you a well-known fact or making something up entirely.
This means you need to verify anything factual. Statistics, dates, claims, quotes. Especially if you're publishing it or sharing it with clients. One wrong stat in a client proposal can undo all the time AI saved you.
The Fix
For important work, ask AI to show its reasoning. Ask "what are you least confident about?" or "flag anything you're not sure of." It won't catch everything, but it catches more than trusting blindly.
Build a quick verification habit: if AI gives you a number, a name, or a date, spend 30 seconds checking it. That's all it takes.
A good rule: the more confident AI sounds about a specific fact, the more you should double-check it.
Using AI for the Wrong Tasks
AI is brilliant at some things and terrible at others. Knowing the difference saves you hours.
AI excels at first drafts, summarising long documents, brainstorming options, reformatting data, explaining concepts, and repetitive text tasks. These are the tasks where AI gives you a genuine time advantage.
AI struggles with nuanced judgment calls, anything requiring real-time information, tasks requiring empathy or relationship context, and original creative vision. These are the tasks where you'll spend 20 minutes prompting and re-prompting, only to end up doing it yourself anyway.
The biggest time waste isn't AI giving bad answers -- it's spending 20 minutes trying to get AI to do something it was never good at.
